Il existe 2 grosseurs de Teckel au Canada (Standard - plus de 11lbs - et Miniature - idéalement 10lbs) et 3 poils différents (poil lisse, poil long ou poil dur). Il y a donc 6 variétés différentes qui ne peuvent être accouplées ensemble./ There are 2 sizes of Dachshund in Canada (Miniature - 10lbs - and Standard - over 11lbs) and 3 kinds of coats (Smooth, Longhair & Wirehair). As such, there are 6 varieties that can’t be bred together.
L’origine du Teckel (ou Dachshund) vient du début du 17e siècle où il était utilisé pour pister le blaireau (Dachs = blaireau et Hund = chien) et le traquer sous terre. Ses pattes courtes, mais puissantes, son caractère de terrier et ses habiletés de chasseur lui permettait de flairer et de suivre sa proie jusque sous terre./ The origin of the Dachshund dates back to the 17th century, where it was used to track and hunt badgers (Dachs = badger & Hund = dog) both on the ground and under. Its short but powerful legs, its terrier temper and hunter abilities allowed it to sniff out its prey and follow it under ground.
C’est un chien rusé et persévérant avec une bonne dose d’énergie. Son grand courage peut même le rendre intrépide. Son instinct de chasseur fait qu’il doit être habitué jeune aux petits animaux ou aux chats et il ne faut pas se surprendre de le voir chasser les petits intrus qui osent s’aventurer sur votre terrain.
